Molly Ringwald: Except Sometimes

So I was a little intrigued about this album and how an actress from such cult-like movies as "Sixteen Candles" and "The Breakfast Club" would come across as a jazz vocalist.  I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the sultry and breathless voice that was singing and the band that was backing her seemed like a playful and fun loving group of people in a room just riffing like the great jazz musicians before them.  Even her voice gives off a joyfulness that is reminiscent of some of the great female singers in Jazz.

The album's first track is "Sooner Or Later", this being the first song has to grab you and keep you ready for the adventure ahead.  It certainly does just that through tracks like: "I Get Along With You Very Well (Except Sometimes)", "I Believe In You", "I'll Take Romance", "The Very Thought Of You" and "Exactly Like You" that ends with a child's laughter.  "Where Is Love" is a song that pulls at the heart strings, because everyone has searched for that special someone in their life and has wondered that very question.  "Pick Yourself Up" is an uplifting romp that would make anyone tap their toe or keep the beat with a finger snap or two.  "Ballad Of Sad Young Men" has a softened tone and more of an acoustic sound to it.  It feels more like a one on one performance between friends. The song that surprised me the most was the cover of the Simple Minds song: "Don't You Forget About Me".  I never thought that particular song would ever become a jazz cover, but it was done so well that I got lost in it and didn't think of the 1980's pop song from a movie that starred Molly Ringwald.  Well done and Dean's List approved!
